Neonatal ICU (NICU)

The Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital provides dedicated care for the tiniest of patients 24 hours a day.

Our approach to care

A Baby Friendly® hospital, Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital promotes breastfeeding, skin-to-skin bonding with infants and in some cases, rooming-in prior to infant discharge in the neonatal nursery. Neonatologists oversee plans of care while neonatal nurse practitioners and an experienced team of nurses provide around-the-clock medical services for the 500 infants that are cared for each year.

PODS

Centra’s Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery has installed four pods specifically for babies suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Made possible thanks to funding from the Children's Miracle Network, each pod is a quiet, partitioned area within the NICU where a mother and baby can bond, and the baby can be kept calm to avoid over-stimulation.

NeoOne Ambulance Image

NeoOne

NeoOne, is a fully customized neonatal ambulance outfitted with the advanced technologies of an NICU and the medical staff crucial for treating our tiniest and youngest patients. The baby will be placed in an isolette that provides a warm, quiet environment and allows for monitoring the baby’s heart and lungs during the ambulance ride. The ambulance is equipped with two isolettes in the case of twins.
