Al-Anon and Al-Ateen
"For over 50 years, Al-Anon (which includes Alateen for younger members) has been offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics. It is estimated that each alcoholic affects the lives of at least four other people... alcoholism is truly a family disease. No matter what relationship you have with an alcoholic, whether they are still drinking or not, all who have been affected by someone else's drinking can find solutions that lead to serenity in the Al-Anon/Al-Ateen fellowship."

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
Find out if AA is right for you. You can review newsletters, get information on how to become a sponsor, find an AA meeting and read the Big Book all online.

American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)
ASAM's mission "increase access to and improve the quality of addiction treatment; to educate physicians (including medical and osteopathic students). other health care providers and the public; to support research and prevention; to promote the appropriate role of the physician in the care of patients with addiction; and to establish addiction medicine as a primary specialty recognized by professional organization, governments, physicians, purchasers and consumers of health care services, and the general public."

HBO Addiction Project
HBO has created an entire site dedicated to addiction. There is a plethora of information on understanding addiction, adolescent addiction, treatment, after care, stigmas and discrimination. They also have clips from their documentary on addiction.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
Everything from handbooks to helplines to events and news. You can find meetings and also learn more about the Narcotics Anonymous World Conference.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
NIAAA's mission statement:"NIAAA provides leadership in the national effort to reduce alcohol-related problems by: Conducting and supporting research in a wide range of scientific areas including genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology, health risks and benefits of alcohol consumption, preventing and treatment coordinating and collaborating with other research institutes and Federal Programs on alcohol-related issues. Collaborating with international, national, state, and local institutions, organizations, agencies and programs engaged in alcohol related work. Translating and disseminating research findings to health care providers, researcher, policymakers and the public."

Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance (SAARA)
"The Substance Abuse and Addiction Recovery Alliance is a community based grassroots membership organization of individuals in recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction, their families, friends and committed community supporters. SAARA's mission is to celebrate, support and advocate for resources and services for the prevention of and recovery from substance abuse and addiction. SAARA promotes social, educational, legal, research and health care resources and services that support accessible, effective and accountable addiction: prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery."

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
"The Agency has sharply focused its mission on building resilience and facilitating recovery for people with or at risk for mental or substance abuse disorders." You can find links to other treatment facilities, a self test to find out if you or someone you know has a problem, information about misuse of prescription drugs and much more.

The Cool Spot
NIAAA sponsored website for kids and pre-teens to learn more about alcohol and drugs with quizzes, facts, and activities.

Virginia Association of Drug and Alcohol Programs (VADAP)
VADAP's mission: "To promote the availability and quality of substance abuse education, prevention, intervention and treatment services for all residents of Virginia."
